Workplace wellbeing often focuses on stress management and creating a safe environment; but happiness is rarely part of the conversation. This is a critical oversight. We don’t prioritise happiness because we don’t truly understand what it is or how essential it is for a thriving, successful workplace.

A happier person is more mentally resilient and better equipped to handle challenges, as well as more likely to seek solutions and problem solving than their less happy counterparts.

Happiness has been found to have direct correlation to improved ease in building and maintaining relationships. Happier employees are more willing to collaborate effectively & foster a supportive environment.

Happier people are quicker to access and tap into their flow state, have more energy and enthusiasm to approach their workload and remain focused without the need for immediate reward.

What really is  happiness?

Happiness is often misunderstood, but simply put is the evidence of positive ingredients in your life; purpose, satisfaction and enjoyment. A happy employee is:

Purposeful

Whether they are truly passionate about their role or not, a happier employee will be able to find and apply purpose to their role.

Engaged

Personal enjoyment leads us to flow state, a mental state of being completely focused on an activity, without distractions, improving productivity and work quality.

Satisfied

A satisfied employee is more committed to their work, ready to invest in their team, and less likely to seek other opportunities.

Resilient

Positive emotions increase personal and mental resilience. Furthering this, happiness keeps us in a parasympathetic state, helping to reduce stress buildup.

My personal story

and why workplace wellbeing matters to me:

7 years ago, I was establishing myself as a young professional in the life & pensions sector. I loved my job, was progressing in my career, and felt excited about my future at the firm. But when I experienced my first bout of clinical depression, I struggled to find support.

Despite having generous sick leave, I felt guilt and shame for being unable to contribute. Returning to work was isolating, as mental health wasn’t openly discussed. I transferred departments, but without the tools to manage my well-being, I continued to struggle and had further sick leave. Eventually, I had to leave - not because I wanted to, but because being unable to manage my mental health made it impossible to stay.

The biggest thing missing from my workplace was education and authentic support for mental wellbeing. Conversations with HR or my managers weren’t structured to help me sustain my work holistically, and as eager as I was to complete my work I didn’t have the tools I needed to stay well. There were no proactive resources—no wellbeing initiatives designed to help employees thrive. If something like Dwtylife had existed back then, I might still be there today.

Joy is something we choose. It can coexist with all other emotions and experiences, and therefore requires nothing other than where we are today.

If we’re serious about workplace wellbeing, happiness must be part of the discussion.
